This style soap dish keeps the soapy water off of the edge of your sink. The soap sits on top of the dish, draining and allowing the soap to dry. This piece may also be used to hold your SOS pads, palm style scrub brush or sponges, allowing air to dry the scrubber more quickly and keeps the mess off of the sink.
